LIVING THE FIGHT
Life, loss and lacerations with Matt Hughes

By Chris Campbell
Wednesday, November 18, 2009 2:49 PM CST

The fighter sits down and presses a plastic bag full of ice against his battered knuckles.

He talks about the worst day of his life. His older brother, Brandon, dead. His own life in disarray. His feelings as numb as his frozen hand.

“I had so much anger and emotion after my brother died,” said Brian Foster, 25. “I didn’t care what happened to me....."

Congratulation to HIT Squad BJJ Instructor Kyle Watson
Kyle Watson

On July 24th and 25th, the Hit Squad Jiu-Jitsu coach, Kyle Watson, competed in the 2009 International Masters and Seniors Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournament in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This tournament is one of the most respected competitions in the sport, alongside the World Championships and the Pan American Games. In the lightweight brown belt category, Kyle made it to the finals after submitting two opponents and defeating a third on points. In the finals Kyle faced a tough Japanese opponent in a back and forth match with many scrambles and a very close finish. Kyle lost narrowly by a score of two points to one advantage, and secured second place in the division. Kyle returned to the tournament the next day for a more impressive performance. He entered the absolute brown belt division where they combine all of the weight classes. Kyle once again made it to the finals after defeating four opponents, the majority of which were from heavier weight classes. In the finals, Kyle faced an opponent who was appropriately nick-named Gigante, coming in around 6’5” and about 250 lbs. (see photo) This sizeable competitor also won the ultra-heavyweight brown belt division the previous day. It was a tough match and Kyle was able to avoid being submitted but eventually lost on points. However, this earned him another second place title and a spot on the podium. It is not only very difficult to medal as an American in Brazil, but doing so in the brown belt division and in the open weight class is quite an accomplishment. Way to go Kyle! That's why the BJJ program at the HIT Squad is so good.

Due to injury Matt Veach will be unable to fight at UFC 102

Matt first injured his back during his college wrestling days and reinjured it during his training camp preparing to fight Evan Dunham. "I tried to fight through the pain but the more I pushed, the worse it got." said Veach. "I plan on coming back stronger after letting my back heal." Marcus Aurelio will replace Veach on the August 29th card.

STLToday.com - Mixed martial arts has a foothold in St. Louis area
Matt Veach

By Luke Thompson
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
06/05/2009

After a short stint of one-on-one grappling, the fighters struggle up the hill next to the abandoned golf course, burdened by fatigue and the heat and humidity of the morning. No more than two miles to the east, the clearly visible Arch and skyline of downtown St. Louis might as well be a different world. Skyscrapers, suits and 9-to-5 jobs have no place here. They're replaced by the dream of being the next Matt Hughes, the next Robbie Lawler, and making it to the big show in Mixed Martial Arts.

Mario Stapel on H.I.T. Squad, victory over Harris Sarmiento
From ADCC NEWS
Submitted by:Keith Mills
Posted on : 5/15/2009

As mentioned in the preview to the recent Shine Fights show Mario Stapel has quite a reputation in Europe but not much is known so far about his recent turn in his career after joining H.I.T. Squad. At Shine Fights Mario showed the range of his skills as he picked apart Harris Sarmiento with leg kicks, kept Sarmiento from taking him down, and ended with a guillotine choke. Here Mario clues us in on how life has changed since joining H.I.T. Squad.

KM: Are you now officially representing H.I.T. Squad?

MS: Yes, I’ve been fighting out of H.I.T. Squad since they opened. The first time I came over was last year February 10th when they opened the gym. This is usually where I train for a fight. I really like the atmosphere here and they like me.

KM: Why choose H.I.T. Squad (hereafter abbreviated HS)?

MS: When I fought in Germany (FX3) I met Jacob Hey over there. Back then I was on a downside of my career. It was because in Germany my business was going well, my own school Mario Stapel MMA Systems. I also came out with the Stapel Fighting Challenge which was my own show. I couldn’t focus on fighting like I could before. Jacob said “if you really want to keep fighting and want to take it to the next level come to us”. I checked it out and really liked it. Everybody was really down to earth and training was tough.
